The Essence Of Ayurveda

Many know the meaning of the Sanskrit word, Ayurveda, which translates to “the Science of Life or the Knowledge of Life”. But what does this really mean? From many years of study and practice of Ayurveda, I have come to understand the true essence of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda acknowledges the idea that the universe (macrocosm) and the individual (microcosm) are deeply interconnected. The patterns, energies, and structures found within the human body mirror those of the cosmos. This intelligence which permeates and animates all life, is within us and is here for us to tap into at any moment. Our body already knows what to do, we need only to listen and be aware.

Ayurveda focuses on the wholeness we already possess, rather than correcting “problems.” It recognizes the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of a person as a complete union, this is true holistic health. Ayurveda doesn’t teach us anything we don’t intrinsically already know. It reminds us, like a remembering, it brings us home. This is the true essence of Ayurveda.

Ayurvedic practices aim to align us with our true nature by following natural rhythms. When we live in harmony with these rhythms, our bodies remain balanced. These practices make us more aware and self-referential of our body and mind's needs.

Ayurveda is essentially a qualia science. We can use the science of qualia and opposites to restore balance and detect imbalances early on before they become disease. This simple yet profound understanding applies to weather, food, herbs, lifestyle, emotions, sounds, colors, and smells. Recognizing nourishing qualities versus depleting ones helps restore balance to our inner climate. Life thrives with an inner climate of warm, moist and nourishing qualities as opposed to harsh/rough, cold, dry qualities.

Ayurveda states that all disease originates from a disconnect from the “Self. Practices like Pranayama, Meditation, and Yoga aim to reconnect us with the “Self”. This connection promotes resilience in mind and body, helping life flow more smoothly. When we connect with “Self,” nature works with us, this is Natural Law.

Ayurveda is not a strict set of rules that you must follow. It is understanding that less is more and is meant to simplify life. It is not about gaining more and more information, but about making the knowledge part of yourself by living it and applying it in your modern life, then it becomes true wisdom and action for you.

In conclusion, Ayurveda is a journey back home, to the wholeness that is already there but has been forgotten. The realization of “Self” doesn’t come from searching out there; it comes from within. Your body already knows what it needs; all we have to do is look at nature and realize we are that very nature and return home.

- The wisdom of Ayurveda is the wisdom of Life.
